Bucks make history with streak-breaking win against Golden State
The Golden State Warriors’ NBA-record start ended after 24 wins when they lost to the Milwaukee Bucks 108-95 on Saturday night.
The loss snapped a 28-game winning streak dating back to the final four regular season games from the 2014-2015 season. Many thought they could get close to – or break – the National Basketball Association record 33 game win streak set by the 1971/’72 Los Angeles Lakers. The Bucks needed the ideal blend of performances – from Greg Monroe’s 28 points and 11 rebounds to Giannis Antetokounmpo’s triple-double to O.J.
According to ESPN article, the reigning league’s MVP Stephen Curry scored a team-high 28 points shooting 10-of-21 from the field, including 2-of-8 from 3-point area. He was just two-of-eight from three-point range.
Forward Draymond Green, who scored 24 points for the Warriors, said he felt like a weight had been lifted off his shoulders now that the streak was over. But, for their part, the Bucks had just finished playing six games in nine days, so that cancels out the Warriors’ fans’ excuses. Accumulated fatigue showed up behind the arc as they went 6 of 26 from downtown, well below their average of 13 makes per game. In a hallway late Saturday, Walton understood Milwaukee had outworked his team and reenergized its goal of winning the season and not the games.
“Well, we knew the streak had to end at some point”, the Warriors posted on their Twitter account.
Spurs 103, Hawks 78: The San Antonion Spurs – the NBA’s top defensive team – held Atlanta to 25 points in the first half and romped to a 103-78 victory over the Hawks.
To get to the Bucks’ streakbuster, you have to start in Boston. But the Bucks also were coming off a Friday game in Toronto, and nothing in their 90-83 loss to the Raptors signaled they were about to take down the mighty Warriors. The difference about playing on the road, and it sounds like the ultimate no-shit truism, is that you don’t get to go home after a game like that.
Point guard Michael Carter-Williams also had 11 in the final quarter, including an exclamation-point dunk with 32 seconds to play.
When the Warriors play two bigs together like that, they can’t play at the same pace on offense and don’t have the spacing they need to operate at their best.
“It’s been a long road trip, [we’re] just trying to refocus as we get back at Oracle [Arena] and maybe start a new streak”. “I’m on the outside looking in and I’m watching Monday Night Football and they’re talking about ‘the streak.’ I’m like, golly”.
The match was more of a big deal for the Warriors who seemed unbeatable until their shots stopped falling. Twenty-four victories, one loss, and now the Golden State Warriors can place aside their record for the most wins to start a pro season.
“Obviously, nobody wanted it to end and you want every night for it to be another notch in that belt for the streak”, Curry said.
