Bucs’ Martin, Winston lend highlights to high-scoring Pro Bowl
Sunday night’s 2016 NFL Pro Bowl football game shifts action back to Hawaii following a one-year pit stop in the Arizona desert last year.
New York Giants running back Tucker Frederickson, the No. 1 pick of 1965, and Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, the No. 1 pick of 2011, went to the Pro Bowl as rookies, and both played collegiately at Auburn. Seahawks defensive lineman Michael Bennett, the game’s defensive MVP, even lined up at quarterback and took a direct snap.
Landry caught a 31-yard TD pass from Buffalo’s Tyrod Taylor with 6:05 remaining in the game. The tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs led the team with five receptions for 91 yards and two scores.
The Seahawks star, who was the first player picked in the all-star game’s draft, led scoring drives on three of Team Irvin’s first four possessions at Aloha Stadium.
Minnesota’s Teddy Bridgewater also added two touchdown passes for Team Irvin.
At the half, Team Irvin owned a 28-14 lead over Team Rice behind 164 yards and three touchdowns from Wilson. Team Irvin struck quickly, as Wilson took advantage of the short field to throw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Atlanta’s Devonta Freeman. But Team Rice countered that Gurley score with a Kelce back of the end zone 10 yard touchdown reception. The 39-year-old former Defensive Player of the Year, who registered a tackle in the game, had already announced his retirement and is a sure bet for the Hall of Fame. The score was set up by a Jurrell Casey interception after the Titans defensive end snared a deflected Carr pass.
Martin helped Team Rice cut the deficit to 28-21 in the third quarter with a 3-yard run early in the third quarter.
“Every time you come out to one of these things it’s just great (because) you battle against these guys all year long, everybody is playmaker, everybody is the guys that you prepare for when you play against them and now they’re all on your team and it’s just great to have all these great players in one spot”, said Kuhn, who gave some insight into a conversation he had with Peterson prior to Thursday’s first practice. Bridgewater, Minnesota’s quarterback, had touchdown passes to Philadelphia Eagles running back Darren Sproles and Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Allen Robinson (two catches, 105 yards).
Wilson was the lone quarterback originally selected to participate in the game.
In addition to his duties on the defensive line, Bennett lined up at wide receiver for one play during the 7-on-7 portion of practice.
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson (3) of Team Irvin looks to pass during the first half of the 2016 NFL Pro Bowl today at Aloha Stadium. Taylor finished 8 of 14 for 120 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions.
