Buddy Hield leads No. 3 Oklahoma over No
Hield scored 12 of his 27 points in the final 3:11, including two 3-pointers. He sank a baseline floater, hit a 3-pointer from the left wing and then another 3-pointer, giving Texas an 11-3 lead. OU’s Buddy Hield was 1 for 6 shooting in the first half and managed only six points.
Some believed the Sooners could remain at the top despite the road loss to Kansas State on Saturday, mostly due to the fact OU stayed No. 1 after losing at Iowa State, which came just hours after being announced as the nation’s top dog. The 63 points were also a season-low.
Hield had a pair of wide-open looks at three-pointers that would have given Oklahoma its first lead since 3-2, but he missed them both.
Texas: Committed just four turnovers in the first half….
The Sooners had to put the game in his hands. Felix, meanwhile, had seven of his nine points in the second half, but he and Taylor were simply unable to outduel Hield in the end.
Then, finally, with less than four minutes remaining, the beast found his shot. However, the Longhorns’ inability to stop Hield hurt them in the game. Woodard made up for Hield’s offensive struggles at home against Texas last season by scoring a team-high 13.
Where was the rest of the gang, though? It was Hield’s ability to get to the free-throw line that turned the game around.
The victory lifted the Sooners to 20-3 overall and 8-3 in the Big 12.
“It was tough. We couldn’t get anything going”, said OU forward Ryan Spangler, who scored eight points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
Yet, it still managed to beat one of the hottest teams in the country.
The Sooners have won 12 straight games at home this season without a defeat and have won 18 consecutive games at home over the past two seasons. Taylor was held to five points in the first half but ended the game with 19 and scored in the final seven minutes. The Longhorns entered the Top 25 for the first time this season earlier Monday.
If the NCAA tournament started today, which team would you pick to win the national championship? Despite Texas’ late-game loss it was the defense that was able to help it in the game.
The Longhorns held a 57-51 lead with 3:30 left, but Hield began his tear with a 3-pointer.
