Buerhle, Blue Jays hammered 12-3 by Rays
The 36-year-old Buehrle has pitched 200 innings 14 seasons in a row and has thrown 198 innings so far this year.
I’ve had the hat for well over a year and to be honest I bought it less because it was the Blue Jays and more because it is a funky, stylized version of the logo and it was time to retire my funky, stylized retro Montreal Expos hat, which also drew its fair share of attention and story-telling about the good old days of that now-defunct franchise (unless you’ve adopted the Washington Nationals as your own because that’s where Les Expos moved to many years ago). Anthopoulos said. “The takeaway would be: Who is the one guy behind Price that gives us the best chance to win Game 2?”
The Rays offense belted three home runs and a dozen hits on the day. “I had tons of family here seeing if I could get to 200 one more time”. The Rays’ 60 saves are most ever by a team with a losing record, but Tampa Bay’s bullpen also led the majors in losses (37) and blown saves (27).
Below, we’ll take a look at the schedule and preview the matchup. Encarnacion still had the force out at second if he would have hustled after the ball but seemed to jog after it allowing the Rays to score a run and the bases remained loaded. But Buehrle then walked Tim Beckham to load the bases and then served up a grand slam to Joey Butler.
Buehrle pretty obviously didn’t have it (unearned nature of those runs notwithstanding), as he lasted just 2/3 of an inning and thus fell short of the two frames he needed.
“We’ll go out and try and win our game”, Toronto manager John Gibbons said. “Just for this team, as hard as we worked to end the season with a victory was big”. Either way, Buehrle has had a noteworthy career, and one that will be remembered for years to come.
“No way I could leave him out there to rot”, Gibbons said. One outcome was that the Jays did not have a regular starter available for Sunday. “I don’t get caught up in that right now”.
“Scale of one to 10, probably a 12”, said Butler, who added a two-run home run in the fifth to become the first Rays rookie since Evan Longoria (2008) to drive in six runs in a game.
The Toronto Blue Jays have finished the season with a 93-69 record, good for second in the American League.
It didn’t come as a surprise that Buehrle will not be on the active roster for the Rangers series.
Otherwise, Toronto will face the AL West victor, either the Astros or Rangers, beginning Thursday at Rogers Centre. “We’ll figure it out and let you guys know in a couple months”.
On a team already featuring David Price, Marcus Stroman, R.A. Dickey and Marco Estrada, it has been obvious for a while that Buehrle was going to be the odd man out. The Rangers were 1-2 in the park this season and went 2-4 against the Jays overall.
“That’s what they do”, Gibbons said. “It’s tough. It sucks, but I understand the situation”.
“I haven’t been feeling the greatest the last month and we’ve got four guys that have been throwing the spit out of the ball. Now we’ll go out there and have a few fun and see what happens”. “Hopefully, it doesn’t, but if it does and they need me in the second round or in the World Series, I’m going to be ready to go out and do everything I can”. Neither is losing two of three in the regular season series finale. Like the team itself, it’s getting more attention lately.
