Building collapses in Thane, 11 dead and several injured
Mumbai: Eight people were killed in Thane district when a 50-year-old three-storey building collapsed in the wee hours of Tuesday. The NDRF personnel, firetenders and sniffer dogs are engaged in the rescue operation.
Last week, a three-storey residential building collapsed in Thakurli area of Thane, leaving nine dead.
Rescue operations are underway.
An eye-witness was quoted saying, “Around 2 am, I heard a loud noise”.
NDRF deputy commandant Sachidanand Gavde informed that the incident took place around 2 am. I saw whole building collapsed in 5 seconds.
The fire brigade has rushed to the spot and the rubble is being cleared at the site.
“More than 15 persons are feared to be trapped inside the concrete wreckage”, according to Sandeep Malvi, press officer with the Thane municipal corporation.
A multi Stored building which has been collapsed due to heavy rain led to the death of 12 and left 7 with serious injuries.
Reports say the municipality had declared the old, dilapidated property unsafe to live in, but the residents had refused to vacate.
Shinde said the only remedy to check collapse would be to speedily renovate all old and dilapidated buildings.
