Bulgaria celebrates International Women’s Day
I don’t know exactly what the March 8 strike will achieve.
“I’ll be striking from cooking and laundry for my partner, emotional work in my relationship and fake smiles and fake contentment”, a person wrote on website advocating for the strike. It makes me feel like I’m of value, like I contributed to the world by producing something of worth.
“Someone asked me why don’t we not show up to work - and we talked about and considered a number of the options”, Rep. Lois Frankel (D-FL) told ThinkProgress over the phone. They succeeded in getting 12 fired workers reinstated; raising their pay to the federal level; and establishing a credit union and a formal grievance procedure. “We’ve seen how numbers are important to this administration; we saw this during the Women’s March and I hope this will also be the case [on Wednesday]”.
Constance, reflecting on the continued challenges for equality in parliament, said: “It is a stark fact that, in 2017, women nowhere in the world can claim to have the same rights and opportunities as men”. But for those who wondered if, and how, the marches could facilitate long-term action, a strike could become part of the answer. The mother who’s going to work to put food in front of her kids. The grandmother who’s working two jobs because she’s raising her grandchildren. So I’d like to also show this side of them through my illustrations’.
International Women’s Day has grown from a labour movement with its roots in a 1908 protest to a UN-recognised annual event. We don’t waste our time (and therefore money) commuting into offices that were originally built with men in mind.
The company’s very first all-about-women campaign was launched by Star Media Group managing director and chief executive officer Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, The Star editor-in-chief Datuk Leanne Goh, former managing director and CEO Datin Linda Ngiam, and AirAsia Berhad CEO Aireen Omar at a ceremony in Menara Star yesterday. That includes learning about the work of grassroots women’s groups; posting stories about women; and donating to groups that support women and girls, she says.
Unfortunately J.K. Rowling joke was just a little too accurate, with a huge out-pouring of indignant men asking about a day dedicated to blokes.
In Boston, a downtown demonstration will protest the gender wage gap, in support of working women.
If you believe women’s rights are human rights, join us in wearing red as a sign of solidarity & revolutionary love for a #DayWithoutAWoman. But she can’t, she explains.
This list is far from complete, and I want to continue adding to it over the weeks, months, and years to come, because people should be reminded every day of women’s economic power.
