Bumpy road: Royals drop both games to Mets in Series rematch
Royals reliever Joakim Soria allowed a solo homer to Mets left fielder Matt Reynolds in the bottom of the sixth on Wednesday, the decisive run in a 4-3 loss at Citi Field. He allowed three runs on eight hits in six innings, striking out four and walking none.
Diamondbacks 4, Blue Jays 2: Yasmany Tomas and Peter O’Brien homered, and Patrick Corbin threw 61/3 solid innings to help Arizona get its fifth straight victory.
Twins 14, Phillies 10: Kurt Suzuki went 4 for 5 with a career-high six RBIs, including a two-run homer, and Minnesota gave Philadelphia its eighth straight defeat. Cabrera, whose athletic slide was responsible for a run in the fourth, also hit a two-run shot in the fifth, for a short-lived 3-2 Mets lead.
Reynolds had an uneventful day in left field before his departure. He scored when Paulo Orlando’s grounder up the middle bounced off the second-base bag for a run-scoring single.
The Royals had won eight of their last nine games before coming to NY. However, it was left to rookie Matt Reynolds to provide the decisive hit as the Mets swept the two-game series from the Royals, who beat them in five games in the 2015 World Series.
Both star players were sent to the doctor as the banged-up Mets packed for a seven-game road trip.
The teams played this one without incident. The 2001 New York Yankees visited the Mets at Shea Stadium while the 2005 Boston Red Sox played the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium. Colon left the game after the incident and was replaced by New York Mets relief pitcher Hansel Robles.
“Just another series”, Yost said before the game.
The news about Syndergaard, an emerging ace in his second big league season and the hardest-throwing starter in the majors, was also a concern.
The St. Louis Cardinals won 4-3 to put themselves in position to sweep their first trip to Chicago since last year’s NL Division Series, though it won’t be easy with the major league-leading Cubs sending reigning NL Cy Young Award victor Jake Arrieta to the mound.
NY sat slumping LF Michael Conforto against the left-hander, so Reynolds started in left and made all his plays.
Colon next is scheduled to pitch Sunday against the Atlanta Braves.
Logan Verrett was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas prior to Wednesday’s game. PH Kendrys Morales missed a go-ahead homer by a few feet and the Royals got only one runner as far as second base over the final four innings.
Everything was going fairly smoothly in Terry Collins’ standard postgame media availability after the Mets’ 4-3 win over the Royals on Wednesday.
After dropping game one of the two game set last night 2-1, the Royals look to bounce back with Danny Duffy on the hill against the hated Noah Syndergaard. He has a 1.91 ERA on the season and the team is 9-4 when he has taken the mound.
