Bumpy start to Obama’s China trip, beginning with the stairs
When Obama did find his way on to a red carpet on the tarmac below, there were heated altercations between the U.S. and Chinese officials, with one Chinese official caught on video shouting: “This is our country!”
US President Barack Obama, often heralded as the world’s most powerful leader, was forced to go out of Air Force One’s “ass” when his plane landed in China in what has been regarded as a sharp and calculated diplomatic snub by Beijing.
Chinese authorities have rolled out the red carpet for world leaders, including India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin, South Korean President Park Geun-hye, Brazil’s President Michel Temer, and British Prime Minister Theresa May, who arrived here on Sunday, The Guardian reported.
“So where we see them violating worldwide rules and norms, as we have seen in some cases in the South China Sea or in some of their behaviour when it comes to economic policy, we’ve been very firm”.
Interactions between Obama and China’s President Xi Jinping reflected little if any of those tensions – and the pair signed papers that formally joined the climate deal that was reached in Paris.
Oklahoma quake felt in several states, as oil wells draw scrutiny.
After her first bilateral meeting with Obama, May was warned that the U.S. wanted to focus on trade negotiations with the European Union and a bloc of pacific nations before considering a deal with the UK. Xi told Obama his country would “unswervingly safeguard” its claims in the region.
Two-way trade, investment and personnel exchanges are at historical highs, and both countries have worked together in combating climate change, advancing negotiations on a bilateral investment treaty, and establishing a mutual trust mechanism between the two militaries, the text adds.
“In the face of challenges, we should build an open world economy and continue to push forward free and convenient trade and investment”, Xi said, stressing that the G20 members should keep their promises not to adopt new protectionist measures. And part of the reason is because we insist on a certain approach to our press pool, for example, that other countries may not insist on. Others were crouched on the ground to inspect a manhole cover.
When the White House official insisted the US would set the rules for its own leader, her Chinese counterpart shot back.
The dispute escalated – and two Chinese officials had to be physically separated from each other after almost coming to blows.
MEA spokesperson Vikas Swarup said theissue of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) – which passes through Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir (PoK) – was brought up during the meeting.
The U.S. president issued a statement on the talks with world leaders. Far more likely is the idea that this snub was created to show that China has no fear of us and not that much respect when you get right down to it. “They probably find it a little overwhelming as well”. Of course we want to encourage trade with China – we want to do business there and for the Chinese to invest here.
Separately, in a taped interview on CNN that aired Sunday, Obama said Donald Trump has been able to woo voters who feel left behind, but he feels optimistic that younger people will reject his positions of intolerance.
The Prime Minister said the delay was down to “the way I operate” because she wanted a fresh look at the evidence for the £18 billion plant. And that’s been the case from my very first state visit here. “We’re standing under the wing”.
