Burglary Suspects Thought They Were Prepared to Handle 13-Year-Old Home Alone
According to the report, the boy was by himself in the house when he heard the suspect trying to break in through the back door. They say Bennett drove Brown to the hospital, where he died. He retrieved his mother’s gun and fired a shot through the door. Once they arrived, they found the unidentified 13-year-old boy & asked him to return out of the home.
An affidavit states the passenger in the vehicle had three gunshot wounds, and was rushed to ER in critical condition. The boy then began firing at the two robbers, resulting in the death of Lamar Brown.
Ira Jerome Bennett, 28, of Kent Avenue in North Charleston faces charges of first-degree burglary and possession of a firearm during a violent crime.
Deputies say the driver of the vehicle, identified as Bennett, reported that someone had shot his auto while driving on the interstate.
Police later discovered a Colt. 45 handgun in the area where the boy said the suspect had tried to gain entry to the house.
The boy’s mother told the Post and Courier: ‘ I’m speechless right now.
“I tell my kids that if anything ever happens to call 911, but I also tell them to protect themselves if they have to”, she said.
The teen is usually home during the day, his mom said, because he attends an online school. Fox Carolina reported that the family spent Tuesday night elsewhere, claiming they didn’t feel safe in the home.
