A Schenectady girl who has received thousands of Christmas cards from across the world received a big surprise Monday.
On 4 December, Terry received her first Christmas card and was pictured with it on her Christmas card tree. We “never thought something like this was possible”, she said.
She said: “As well as sending cards, they went one step further and have pledged to donate all the money from any cards bought between now and 21st Dec to the fund set up for Safyre’s care. There are no words to describe how many people were there supporting the family, or how attractive Safyre was”, said Squeo. Until then, they continue to post updates and more thank yous on the Facebook page set up for supporters of Safyre. Safyre Terry has endured much since the terrible day in May 2013 when firefighters found her clutched in the arms of her dying father, who had shielded her with his body and saved her from the flames that killed him and Safyre’s three younger siblings in their apartment in Schenectady in upstate NY.
The announcement came at Sa’Fyre’s twin cousins’ birthday party. Asked by reporters what she would say to the strangers who had been moved to send these things, she beamed into a camera. “So we’re just thrilled to be a part of this and thrilled to help Sa’fyre”, Postmaster John Reilly tells News 10.
“She’s overwhelmed, and it’s an fantastic blessing”, Squeo said.
In just a week, Safyre has received thousands of Christmas cards, along with gifts, including dolls and teddy bears, from well-wishers from all around the world.
The family’s YouCaring fundraiser site, which once had a modest goal of raising $15,000, has raised more than $300,000 to date, as support pours in from around the world.
