Bus carrying Radford University, Virginia Tech students overturns
Eighteen of the students injured were from Radford, said Joe Carpenter, vice president for university relations and chief communications officer at the school.
State police confirm the bus driver was charged with reckless driving after taking the ramp too quickly. Police said Chidester and about 34 of the 50 students – returning to Virginia Tech, Radford University and the University of Virginia – were transported to six Metro-Richmond hospitals for treatment of minor injuries.
Chesterfield Fire and EMS spokesman Lt. Jason Elmore said the bus was carrying 49 passengers.
There was a bus scheduled to leave Richmond at 6 p.m. on Sunday and arrive at the University at 7:30 p.m. One person suffered minor injuries in that crash, according to state police. A police statement says the driver lost control on a curve of the ramp and the bus overturned on its side. “I was on my way home; I got a call that said the bus flipped over on Chippenham”. The injuries range from bumps and bruises to cuts and contusions, WTVR reports.
Several parents arrived at the scene to pick up their children.
The bus was a part of a local ride-share transportation service and is reported by NBC as being operated by Abbott Bus Lines of Roanoke, who are cooperating fully in the investigation.
Abbott Trailways, the charter bus company told ABC News “The cause of the accident is under investigation and Abbott Trailways is again working with police to determine what happened”.
The tipster advised police that no one had been injured in the shooting.
Sunday night, November 29th, a motorcoach owned and operated by Abbott Trailways was involved in an accident in Richmond, Virginia. Geller says more details are expected to be released later.
