Bus driver said he was tired before deadly crash
Two people died and 18 others were injured after a Greyhound bus overturned on Highway 101 in San Jose.
The bus had been traveling north on Highway 101 at around 6.40am when it flipped and landed across the central crash barrier near San Jose, the San Jose Fire Department said.
Olivera says a police investigator told him his mother died after being ejected from the bus. The barrels, filled with sand or water, are there to prevent a vehicle from slamming directly into the concrete freeway abutment, he said. Gipson said the bus was occupied by 20 customers and the driver.
Thirteen percent of all big rig and bus crashes were caused by driver fatigue in 2006 and 2007.
The crumpled bus remained on its right side, straddling the center median, throughout the morning.
CHP hasn’t released the identity of the victims.
A Greyhound driver fell asleep at the wheel, passengers said, leaving two women dead as the bus rolled onto its side on a California highway.
California Highway Patrol Sergeant Lisa Brazil said the reason why the bus driver lost control is unknown, but it was pouring rain when the accident happened.
Antonio Olivera said his mother was a stay-at-home mom who loved to take care of her family and had immigrated to California from the Philippines in September. Capt. Christopher Salcido said the bus was carrying the driver and 19 passengers. Prosecutors were notified as a matter of protocol, Miceli said.
Salcido said five passengers suffered moderate injuries and 13 suffered minor injuries.
The National Transportation Safety Board is also sending a federal Highway Investigation Team to run a parallel safety investigation, agency spokesman Eric Weiss said.
The driver began his shift at 11:30 p.m.as he drove the bus from Los Angeles Monday with stops planned in San Jose, San Francisco and Oakland. At least nine of the injured have been transported to local hospitals with varying degrees of injuries.
As for the fatigue claim of the driver, Gipson said that their employees are required to have at least nine hours of sleep before a trip.
The coroner’s office couldn’t be reached for comment. “I haven’t seen her body”.
