Bush, Clinton court black voters at Urban League meeting
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.- Five presidential hopefuls including Hillary Clinton and Jeb Bush gathered in south Florida on Friday to talk about race, education and justice. Mr. Trump’s bombastic ways have simultaneously made it all but impossible for those vying to be the alternative to Mr. Bush to emerge, and easier for Mr. Bush, the former Florida governor, to position himself as the serious and thoughtful alternative to a candidate who has upended the early nominating process…
In a rare gesture of bipartisanship, Bush planned to warmly quote President Obama, usually the subject of his derision.
Then Mrs Clinton stomped all over those plans.
In his first Spanish-language tv community interview since launching his 2016 presidential marketing campaign, Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush fielded questions starting from the upcoming presidential debate to Donald Trump, from Latin American overseas coverage to his favourite music, and whether or not he had ever skilled discrimination. She did not attend the 50th anniversary of the Bloody Sunday march in Selma, Alabama in order to go to a Clinton Foundation event. Clinton also attacked Bush’s policies on minimum wage.
“These are just more false, cheap political shots to distract from the fact that Secretary Clinton has no record of accomplishment to run on this race”, spokeswoman Allie Brandenburger said in a statement. This year, the Clintons boosted personal donations to their family charity, the Clinton Foundation, to between $5 million and $10 million.
Some of the big names among Republicans and Democrats presidential candidates are all sharing one stage this week in Florida. “They (Americans) can’t rise if their governor makes it harder for them to get a college education”, she said, a critique of Mr Bush’s decision as governor to eliminate affirmative action in college admissions.
“I believe in the right to rise in this country”, he said, without reference to Mrs Clinton’s earlier swipes at the slogan.
In a sense, she is taking a page from the campaign manual of her husband, former President Bill Clinton, who built his successful 1992 campaign on a series of substantive speeches.
“George, he’s dark-skinned, and they spoke awful things about those from Miami”, Bush recalled, without offering details.
“Could Hillary get any smaller on her trip through Florida?” tweeted Tim Miller, Bush’s communications director.
Hillary Clinton lambasted Jeb Bush when they both spoke at the same event on Friday. He said that as Florida governor, he ordered the removal of the Confederate battle flag from the state capitol, raised the number of black judges and tripled the state’s hiring of minority-owned businesses.
Super PAC officials have said 9,400 of their roughly 9,900 donors gave $25,000 or less.
“Now, it’s up to us to build on that momentum, and we all have to do our part – but those of us who strive to lead have a special responsibility.”
On overseas affairs, Bush was essential of President Barack Obama’s new Cuba coverage, needs the D.J.to be extra lively in its help of dissidents in Cuba and Venezuela, and stated Congress should act to assist Puerto Rico cope with its debt disaster.
“The Urban League deserved better today”, she said. He later apologized, saying he did not “mean to be insensitive” to the “depth of feeling that all of us should be attaching to this issue”. But conservative columnist David Brooks wrote in The New York Times that “she’s cleared the first political hurdle in this campaign” with an agenda that “will excite the progressive base without automatically alienating the rest of the country”. “One police officer at a time”.
In her remarks, Clinton took a more direct approach, ticking off the names of African Americans who have died after interactions with law enforcement – including Eric Garner, Walter Scott and Freddie Gray – to knowing nods in the audience. “I’ve been around a long time – I’ve seen that show before”, she said of politicians who don’t follow through on their promises.
