Bush Could Be Open To a few Syrian Refugees
Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, a low-polling Republican candidate, said he had suspended any settlement of Syrian refugees in his state, as other governors have done. “The reason the human brain has these big frontal lobes as opposed to other animals is because we can engage in rational thought-processing”, he said. “We are choosing the leader of the free world”.
Bush appeared on five morning news shows on Sunday and Monday, calling for the U.S.to “declare war” against ISIS and urged the use of “massive force” to take out the terror group.
His comments come in the aftermath of the deadly Paris attacks that killed 129 people, and as Bush struggles to break into the lead of the unsettled Republican nomination fight. He recently ordered 50 more USA special operations forces to Iraq to help guide anti-Islamic State airstrikes.
Republicans also expressed worries about the possibility of Muslims becoming radicalized in the United States or militants entering the country as refugees from the Syrian conflict after reports that one of the Paris attackers might have been a refugee.
Trump said, if elected, he would consider shutting down Islamic mosques in the United States in an effort to combat Islamic State.
“I would hate it do it, but it’s something that you’re going to have to strongly consider because a few of the ideas and a few of the hatred, the absolute hatred, is coming from these areas”, Trump said.
Bush, a year ago viewed as the likely front-runner, has failed to move to the top tier of GOP White House hopefuls in a field where political outsiders Donald Trump and Ben Carson and charismatic young lawmakers Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz have eclipsed him.
“The United States, in conjunction with our North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies and more Arab partners, will need to increase our presence on the ground”, he added.
Bush reiterated that our primary goal should be to make Syria a safe place for refugees to go back to and advocates creating safe havens in the region.
He said the US must do “thorough screening” before accepting “a limited number” of refugees.
As he did Tuesday during a three-stop tour across SC, Bush argued Wednesday that the presidential race has taken on a more somber, realistic tone.
Bush has long faulted President Barack Obama’s administration, and former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton – the leading Democratic presidential candidate – for allowing wholesale federal spending cuts prompted by the 2013 budget reconciliation after Congress and the president were unable to craft more strategic cuts.
