Buzz Aldrin claimed expenses for his trip to the moon
A Travel Voucher Memorandum detailed in very matter-of-fact terms the “schedule of expenses and amounts claimed” for a work trip by employee Colonel Edwin E. Aldrin in July 1969.
He posted the images of his travel expenses on Twitter and these images have gone viral since.
It showed that he had travelled on business from his home in Houston, Texas to the moon and back again.
The paltry sum is thought to include his rental auto to get to the launch site at Cape Kennedy.
Buzz Aldrin has shared his documentation from his trip which included the travel voucher for his trip, showing that it cost just $33.31 – or £21.38 – to make the round trip from Houston, Texas.
The customs form is also there, because even if you go to the moon, you still have to declare what you brought back. He revealed that the Apollo 11 mission crew had to proclaim the moon rocks and dust samples too following their return.
The form, which is dated July 24, 1969, is signed by both Neil Armstrong, who was the first man on the moon, and Aldrin, who was Apollo 11’s Lunar Module pilot.
It listed their flight number as “Apollo 11” and under the “Departure: Place and Country” section said simply “Moon”. It was during those celebrations, Aldrin shared some of these photos on Twitter. The next giant leap will be #Mars.’.
In one of his posts Aldrin recalled, “The surface of the moon was like talcum powder and felt “squishy” under my feet”.
