Bystander nurse, EMT help deliver baby in auto
Rose Abbud was supposed to give birth at a hospital but because of traffic, she gave birth at the passenger’s seat of their auto.
“I went to grab my wife’s bag and her water broke”, Trevor related.
Pregnant Rose Abbud and her husband Trevor were trapped in beach traffic on their way to the hospital.
“What really freaked me out is I saw her eyes, I saw her whole head, but she wasn’t crying, and I started freaking out”.
“The baby’s head and shoulders were out, one more push the baby was out”.
‘That’s when I called 911, ‘ he told Asbury Park Press.
Abbud pulled to the side of Route 36, blared his vehicle horn and called 911 as the first stages of the delivery happened before him.
Two women who happened to be at a nearby beach club – trauma nurse Sarah Wood and Rumson First Aid Squad EMT Lauren Kammerer – heard the commotion and ran over to help.
Trevor likewise said that it was a good thing he wiped the clown make up that was on his face before leaving the house because people may have had a different thought had they seen him screaming out of the vehicle with his clown makeup. “I didn’t think she was alive”, adds Trevor.
He was screaming until he realized his wife and baby would be alright, Kammerer recalled. “What a story – she’s going to love this when she’s older”, says Trevor. “He was completely panicked”, Wood said. “It was insane”.
The Abbuds, who have an 18-month-old son, had set off from their home in Middletown after Rose’s waters broke at 6.20pm on Saturday. “It actually was superior to see the infant and (hear) the primary cry”.
“My wife and Baby Bella are healthy and doing great thanks to you guys!”
Kammerer, whose EMT training includes delivering babies in emergency situations, was thankful both Rose and her baby were doing well.
