BYU overcomes 3 turnovers to beat UConn 30-13
But UConn put together a 55-yard drive to make it a one-score game, capping it with a 42-yard field goal by Bobby Puyal.
The Huskies, trailing 13-10, faced a third-and-1 from their own 26 when BYU safety Kai Nacua pressured UConn quarterback Bryant Shirreffs as he passed the ball. Senior receiver Terenn Houk had 129 yards on six receptions and junior running back Algernon Brown had 95 yards on the ground for the Cougars (3-2), who scored 20 fourth-quarter points while halting a two-game losing streak.
The Huskies defense, ranked 24th in the nation in terms of points allowed, may find it hard to shut down Mangum-the BYU quarterback has a 162.7 passer rating at home and has been sacked three fewer times at home than on the road.
However, BYU’s 30-13 victory before a crowd of 56,393 Friday night at LaVell Stadium could be traced back to a series of UConn miscues. UConn’s Andrew Adams already has 34 tackles and two interceptions and he will be looking to see if BYU QB Tanner Mangum makes any mistakes.
Connecticut cornerback Jhavon Williams, right, picks of a pass…
BYU quarterback Tanner Mangum (12) carries the ball as he looks downfield in the first half during an NCAA college football game against Connecticut Friday, October 2, 2015, in Provo, Utah.
Two first-half turnovers and a pair of errant field goal attempts kept BYU from taking control on the scoreboard, and the momentum swung UConn’s way after Mangum’s pass intended for Mathews was short and picked off by Jhavon Williams in the end zone.
Connecticut running back Arkeel Newsome (22) is lifted in the air… On the next play, BYU lost Arkeel Newsome in coverage allowing the sophomore tailback to catch a 30-yard touchdown pass in front of the BYU sideline to tie the game at 7 woth 1:42 left in the half. Magnum was 7 for 7 for 80 yards to set up Francis Bernard’s 1-yard scoring run to give the Cougars the 7-0 lead with 2:44 left in the first quarter.
