“When someone just doesn’t want to pick you up because of what you look like, it’s not a good thing for my daughter to see”, she testified.
“I’m always out with my young daughter trying to grab a cab”.
The judge recommended Raza pay $10,000 in compensatory damages and a civil penalty of $15,000.
A taxi driver may have to pay $25,000 after a judge said the cabbie refused to pick up passengers because they’re black, passing them over for white riders while they watched. “It’s the point. Someone else will pursue this”, Jordan said.
Administrative Law Judge Raymond Kramer said Raza showed “willful discrimination” against Jordan, an accounting executive at a stock transfer firm, and her family.
And report him she did, first to the city’s Taxi and Limousine Commission, which fined Raza $200 after he pleaded guilty, then to the Commission on Human Rights, which took up the racial discrimination case, the Daily News reported.
“She’s the one being racist”, he said.
Jordan filed a complaint against Raza to the TLC and the city’s Commission of Human Rights, at the urging of Holder who works for the city’s 311 system, she said. Raza, who moved to Staten Island from Pakistan in 2001, told DNAinfo New York.
Jordan admitted in court that she called the other passengers “white bitches” but said she regretted saying it. He told Eyewitness News over the phone that two women jumped into his yellow cab before Jordan and her daughters and that she went off the deep end.
“She was using inappropriate language”, he told the paper.
Raza claims he never saw Holder and that he let out a passenger at Macy’s and then the two white women got into his cab.
Just last year, the taxi commission in Washington, D.C., launched a similar effort and said 84 passengers were improperly turned away.
“If you drive a cab, then drive a cab and pick up all fares”.
