Cabrera has 2 HRs in win over ChiSox
CHICAGO (AP) – Justin Upton hit a three-run home run in the 11th inning to lift the Detroit Tigers over the Chicago White Sox 5-3 on Monday for their 11th win in 14 games. From the beginning of the season until August 3, the day before he broke his 32-game home run drought, Abreu had only 11 home runs as he batted.269/.326/.413. Now 12 games over.500 (74-62), they have matched their high-water mark for the season (also at 61-49 and 73-61).
“I’ve been on time a lot more, ” Upton said. “Like I always say, I get out there and try to find a groove and roll with it”. Had a good tempo, good pace and he knows those guys better than anybody. “That’s what you play the game for”.
Three other Tigers reached milestones in the win. The Twins put up 11 on the White Sox in Saturday’s 11-3 loss, while Monday’s affair wasn’t quite as explosive for either team (a 5-3 White Sox loss in 11 innings).
“He has a track record of kind of being streaky”, said Tigers manager Brad Ausmus.
“You can’t deny that”, Sale said. “Look on the back of his card, there are some pretty awesome numbers”. It was back and forth. I never go in there and tell him I need a break. Struggled a little bit more and then got hot.
With two outs in the eighth, Sale gave up a single to Cabrera, who advanced to second on Adam Eaton’s fielding error. “Yeah, no doubt. But it makes for good competition”.
The White Sox rallied in the bottom of the 11th, with Avisail Garcia knocking in Todd Frazier (who walked), bringing the tying run to the plate in the form of Tyler Saladino. The second-year pitcher has faced Chicago three times this year and has no decisions despite an ugly 6.39 ERA.
Justin Verlander had it going on right from the get-go, striking out five of the first seven White Sox batters.
Robinson Cano hit his 32nd home run of the season as the Seattle Mariners beat the Texas Rangers 14-6 and Carlos Gonzalez hit a grand slam to help the Colorado Rockies to a 6-0 win over the San Francisco Giants.
8-4 over the White Sox after trailing in the sixth. He now has 43 four-hit games and 38 multi-homer games in his illustrious career. Two of Avila’s six homers this season has come against the Tigers. With him he’s so tough because this year with as hard as he’s been throwing he’s been able to live at the top of the zone with the fastball.
Sometimes, you see something that’s so awesome that it makes your eyes pop out of your head.
Nate Jones relieved Sale in the ninth and pitched a no-hit scoreless inning with three strikeouts.
On Wednesday in Detroit, the Tigers walked off against closer David Robertson. “If somebody’s got really bad stats on a winning team, I’ll trade it with him”.
Beck suffered his first loss since his major-league debut on May 28, 2015 in Baltimore.
“They are going through a September run”, Avila said.
Chicago White Sox left fielder Melky Cabrera catches a fly ball hit by Detroit Tigers’ Cameron Maybin during the first inning of a baseball game Monday, Sept. 5, 2016, in Chicago. He also had two non-homer hits for a four-hit day.
