‘Cage match’ with Trump? Forget it, GOP rival Ted Cruz says
In the crowded Republican field for president, 24 percent of the likely Republican voters in SC support Trump, according to the latest Winthrop Poll that came out of the field on December 7, the same day Trump made his controversial stand about enacting a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on”.
But Cruz has made inroads with evangelicals.
The verbal jabbing between the two candidates had escalated after Cruz, a Texas senator, was caught on tape criticizing Trump’s judgment and and readiness to be President.
“People who are concerned about losing again – and that’s what it boils down to – might say, ‘I hadn’t really considered Rubio but he looks like the best establishment choice”.
The pair also noted that terrorism has skyrocketed to the top issue in the minds of voters (at 19 percent) following recent Islamic terror attacks in Paris and San Bernardino with “seven in 10 Americans now call[ing] the Islamic State extremist group a major threat to the United States’ security, the highest level since the Times/CBS News poll began asking the question a year ago”. For now, it’s in Cruz’s interests to keep playing nice with Trump; his trajectory is healthier than any of his competitors’ right now, and he’s angling to inherit Trump’s supporters if and when the mogul finally sputters and fades (which Cruz has said he expects to happen). I am leading by so much he must.
Combined, Trump and Cruz are at 46% in the polls, according to Real Clear Politics, and their followers like them for similar reasons. “People are looking for who is prepared to be a commander in chief”. Most of the survey was conducted before Donald Trump suggested temporarily blocking Muslims from entering the U.S.
During a speech at the Heritage Foundation, Cruz said he would neither confirm nor deny the statements. They are also enraged about his suggestion that he could mount a third-party run if he is not treated in a way that he deems fair during the GOP primary process. “I promise you”, Trump said.
“In the course of a Presidential election, the voters are going to make a decision about every candidate”. I might go with him, ‘ ” Woodard said.
“I like and respect Donald Trump, I continue to like and respect Donald Trump”, Cruz told reporters while campaigning in SC earlier this week.
