Caitlyn Jenner urges veto of South Dakota transgender bill
Transgender rights supporters are now lobbying that Governor Dennis Daugarrd to veto the bill. A federal judge a year ago dismissed a lawsuit brought by a transgender student at the University of Pittsburgh who was expelled for using the men’s locker rooms and bathrooms.
“The only thing they have to do to accommodate transgender students is put their biases aside and let the students be students”, said Mara Kiesling with the National Center for Transgender Equality in Washington, D.C.
“At the end of the day we all deserve that same human kindness that same simple human decency to use the bathroom wherever we want to use it”, added Lewis.
If Daugaard signs the bill – and he’s indicated he will – then South Dakota would become the first state in the country with such a law.
Critics of the measure dropped off the petitions Tuesday.
The Human Rights Campaign have identified 44 anti-transgender bills being proposed in more than 22 states. “With this and other harmful legislation pending, South Dakota legislators seem determined to make sure the state is an unwelcoming place for LGBT people to live and work”. “It’s an encouraging sign and we hope that this is an indication from lawmakers that they’re starting to recognize that transgender South Dakotans deserve respect – just like everybody else”.
The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday.
Dennis Daugaard has scheduled a meeting with a group of transgender people.
Daugaard’s office says the meeting is Tuesday.
A Sioux Falls nonprofit organization also held an event in Pierre to show their support for transgender children.
It’s a bill some say singles out the most vulnerable of our population.
The governor says he hasn’t decided how to act on the bill.
Under the bill, people who do not want to use bathrooms of their birth sex can request that schools provide “reasonable accommodations”.
