Cal Bears staggered by 3 straight losses
The Golden Bears are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 road games and 9-19 ATS in their last 28 conference games. He ranks first in the Pac-12 and seventh in the nation with an average of 119.5 receiving yards per game.
The Ducks enter the game with a 5-3 overall record, including 3-2 in the conference. Cal has allowed 216 points in the past four games vs. the Ducks, including at least 55 in each of the past three….
“That was one of the things we talked about in the locker room after the game: Despite all the things we did to kick ourselves in the gut, we never flinched, and that’s a good thing”, Ducks coach Mark Helfrich said.
A 1,000-yard running back in Daniel Lasco also returned.
Adams and Carrington hooked up on their 46-yard pass play – the third game in a row with huge plays for them – and Adams jumped into the end zone for a 10-yard TD run to tie the game. “The more we can use, the better”.
– Familiarity: “Teams are starting to understand their concepts”, Pac-12 Networks analyst Glenn Parker said. “They’re at their best when they’re simple and what they do is based on what the defense gives them”. “Because I know they want this one just as bad”. The third-year starter faced as little pressure as he had seen this season, completing 23 of 31 passes for 272 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions. Jackson has dabbled on offense (and played mostly receiver a week earlier against Utah), and this week could be a good time for him to be on that side of the ball, considering WR JuJu Smith-Schuster is recovering from hand surgery. “Defenses cause just a little bit of a hiccup in his timing and the offensive line is backpedaling and it’s tougher for him to make his throws”.
Goff acknowledged he might have been pressing in recent weeks but doesn’t see it as being too big an issue. “The biggest thing Jared’s got to do is keep playing. I was so proud of them”, Kessler said. The Golden Bears average 490 yards per game on offense, including 337 passing and 153 rushing. Opposing defenses, which don’t respect the run game, are loading up to stop Goff and his receivers. Taj Griffin added 59 rushing yards.
“To become a top-tier team, you’ve got to beat top-tier teams”, Dykes said.
STATS THAT MATTER: Goff is the 92nd player in FBS history to reach 10,000 career passing yards. “We hear a lot that we’re not as physical as past teams or teams in the Pac-12”. “I don’t really like duck myself”. “When I did scramble, receivers did a good job of coming with me and keeping the play alive.”…
“When we don’t do well we need to be able to reset and comeback”, Goff said.
The Bears gave us a moment of hope, taking a quick 10-0 lead and looking for all the world like a real football team.
But the equation means Goff can be searching for just three targets among seven defenders in the secondary. “There’s tradeoffs”, Dykes said. Schneider answered with a 19-yard field goal for the Ducks.
-WR Steven Mitchell Jr., who had missed two games because of an ankle sprain, played last week.
Oregon has a seven-game winning streak over the Golden Bears, who haven’t defeated the Ducks since a 26-16 victory in Strawberry Canyon in 2008. Goff was bad, though his offensive line couldn’t do anything to slow down Oregon’s three and four man rush.
The Golden Bears (5-3, 2-3 Pac-12) will travel to Eugene, Ore. this weekend to take on the rival Oregon Ducks (4-3, 3-2 Pac-12) at 7:30 pm on Saturday, November 7.
“I think they’ll throw the ball all over the field”, Parker predicted.
Receiver Stephen Anderson said only the bottom line matters. “We just have to keep improving”.
