The influx has strained the 28-nation European Union and prompted a rash of border closures.
The long-neglected issue was raised recently amid heated debates over 7,000 refugees from the Middle East that Poland is to host.
A 20-year-old Iraqi was found dead on Tuesday in a lorry near the French port of Calais, crushed by pallets as he tried to reach Britain, local authorities said.
A truck driver found the body “probably crushed by pallets”, Calais authorities said in a statement.
Two other members of the Iraqi man’s family were also found on board the lorry but were unhurt, the spokesman added.
About 3,500 refugees from Syria, Iraq and African countries are camping out of Calais, hoping to reach Britain for a better life.
