Calgary Flames, Mark Giordano Agree To 6-Year Contract Extension Worth $40.5M
Giordano’s signing may have a domino effect on prominent teammates who also have one year remaining on their respective contracts. Going into the offseason, the Calgary Flames’ biggest priority was locking up their captain long-term.
“The only way to get a six-year deal was to make it a fair number that works for both sides”.
“Mark has established himself over the previous few years as an elite defenceman within the league”, Flames basic supervisor Brad Treliving said. The injury caused Giordano to miss the rest of the year, but the veteran defenseman has reportedly recovered and will be ready when National Hockey League training camp opens in September.
While the Flames can celebrate the long-term health of their blue line, their forwards have some substantial negotiations ahead. “Leaves enough money on the table to pay (Sean) Monahan and (Johnny) Gaudreau when their time to negotiate comes”.
“Mark is an absolute key cog in this team, that hasn’t played a full season since 2011”, he said. In addition to the injury woes, the acquisition of Dougie Hamilton and the vast improvement in Kris Russel’s game may cut into Giordano’s ice-time resulting in a less productive season. However, with the Calgary Flames having $30 million tied up on 6 defensemen, this contract may also be a contributing factor to a trade down the road to acquire a skilled forward. Brodie will take up a very reasonable $4.65 million annually through 2020, with Giordano on the books through 2021.
Flames fan Dustin Miller saw the deal as “a real steal of a contract from the team’s perspective”.
