Calgary Flames News: Mark Giordano Signs Extension
The Calgary Flames have locked up Captain, Mark Giordanno by signing him to a six-year contract extension.
Don’t be surprise to see Calgary in the postseason in 2015-16.
First a 14 goal, 47 point campaign in 64 games the 2013-2014 season, then an 11 goal, 48 point campaign the following year in only 61 contests – the offensive numbers alone paint a picture of strong defensive structure for the Toronto native, which he’ll hopefully carry over into the upcoming year. It’s also a very reasonable sum for a No. 1 blueliner who was the favorite to claim the 2015 Norris Trophy before he suffered a torn biceps tendon in February, prematurely ending his season.
According to multiple reports, Giordano’s contract comes with an annual average of $6.75 million for a total value of $40.5 million.
Last season, he was named to the National Hockey League All-Star Game and was a finalist for the NHL’s Foundation Player Award. Giordano would have been a restricted free agent next year.
Giordano has been the captain of the Flames since 2013.
Calgary’s captain for the past two seasons was a key catalyst in the attack speed the Flames generated from its back end.
“The only way to get a six-year deal was to make it a fair number that works for both sides”.
The Flames defence will be something to be proud of in the near future, with Giordano, Dougie Hamilton, and T.J. Brodie all signing for long term deals.
Giordano’s commitment to the Flames could have a domino effect on prominent teammates who also have one year remaining on their respective contracts. “We got this one done today and it’s taken some time”.
