Calgary is fifth most liveable city in the world
Both surveys agreed that Vienna ranked as the second most livable city in the world.
An annual list ranking the world’s most livable cities has once again given props to three in Canada.
The 2015 Global Livability Ranking shows Melbourne, Australia as the most “livable” city in the world.
Melbourne, Australia, took the top spot for the fifth consecutive year, a position Vancouver once had until it slipped to third place in 2011. So if you’ve been thinking about moving, now you know where to go.
It’s compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit, which gives cities a rank out of 100 for areas such as stability, healthcare, culture and environment, and education and infrastructure.
Melbourne scored a 97.5, just two-and-a-half points shy of a ideal score.
That’s highest among Canadian cities while Toronto finished fourth and Calgary tied for fifth.
But elsewhere, there’s been a marked deterioration in previously stable regions, such as Europe and North America, caused by events such as The Charlie Hebdo attacks in the heart of Paris and race-fueled civil unrest in a number of U.S. cities.
Over those past five years, 57 cities have actually shown sliding scores.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, the least liveable cities in the world included: Tripoli in Libya; Lagos in Nigeria; Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea; Dhaka in Bangladesh and Damascus in Syria. “Chinese cities saw livability fall in the wake of riots and unrest in 2012, most notably due to widespread anti-Japanese sentiment”. Tokyo, Japan appeared on the list at number 15. The report explained how the rankings were determined.
