Calgary man charged after flying in a lawn chair attached to balloons
A helium activist known as the Calgary Balloon Man has gained worldwide fame for floating his balloon-chair over the Canadian city.
Police say it was a stunt to promote his company.
‘I can’t specify the altitude I went to…I was looking down at a 747, it was a surreal experience.’.
“I did anticipate they would be a little upset”, Boria said.
Though that sounds less whimsical as it does INCREDIBLY risky to everyone in said 747s, Boria maintains he “did everything [he] could to make it as safe to the general public as possible”.
Daniel Boria, from Victoria, flew over Calgary before parachuting to safety. He landed some nine miles away, nowhere near what police suspect was his desired landing zone, a large field referred to as the Stampede Grounds.
Besides being charged by the police, Boria suffered minor injuries after he landed back on the ground.
The 26-year-old devised the stunt as a marketing ploy to gain attention to his all-natural cleaning solution company, the Toronto Star reported.
“It was the most fun thing I’ve ever done”, he told the Calgary Sun, after being released from jail Monday.
But things quickly went wrong.
The charge of mischief is related to the lawn chair, which could cause damage or hurt someone when the balloons pop and it falls to the ground, said Grant.
“But there’s still the question of the chair being up in the air”, he added.
“That’s something you never want to live with, we don’t believe it was a unsafe stunt, we’re the ones who put it together, it was a five-pound lawn chair, the balloons popped one by one and it would come down very slow”, he said.
The stunt is similar to a scene in the film Danny Deckchair, in which a man becomes a national sensation when he lifts off in his deck chair tied to balloons.
