Calgary Nose Hill Liberal candidate’s offensive tweets cause backlash

Social media has claimed another victim and has forced the Liberal candidate for Calgary-Nose Hill to apologize and resign.

Some tweeters have tweeted their understanding and respect towards Buzreba for owning up to her actions as a teen.

“I spoke with Ala last night who recognizes her mistake, who apologizes for that mistake and who assumes personal responsibility and takes on the consequences that come with what she did”, he said Wednesday during a campaign stop in Winnipeg.

It’s not the first time, nor will it be the last time, that someone unleashes an emotional and vitriolic outburst on social media.

It underscores, once again, that what we write and post on social media is not confidential.

The 21-year-old MP candidate resigned Tuesday after spending the day under fire for comments she’d posted on Twitter in 2011.

The Calgary-Nose Hill riding, long a Conservative stronghold, has been held by Diane Ablonczy since it was created in the mid-’90s.

Screenshots of the tweets published between 2009-2012 include one in which she allegedly told another user to “go blow your brains out you waste of sperm #racist #asshole #bigot”. Buzreba had been running against Conservative junior cabinet minister Michelle Rempel.

In yet another, she reports that she just got her hair cut and looks “like a flipping lesbian”. Jenuth says she has since changed, and points out that targeting the comments she made as a child is unfair. Some are clearly out of their depths in matters of politics, others don’t seem to have a broad grasp of issues facing the country and many seem to have been picked exclusively to appease ethnic minorities and to garner votes for the party.
