According to reports, Bhullar and another vehicle stopped on the highway near Red Deer to help passengers of a vehicle that had skidded off the icy highway and rolled into the median.
MLA Manmeet Bhullar died Monday trying to help a stranded motorist. A tractor trailer that was also northbound, and descending the hill, appears to have lost control, striking the rear of the first vehicle that had stopped to assist, then continued into the median out of control and struck 35-year-old Bhullar, who was outside his vehicle on foot in the median.
Manmeet Singh Bhullar was appointed to Cabinet as Minister of Service Alberta in October 2011.
Manmeet’s accomplishments are well-known.
The light of our lives went dark today.
“Just two weeks ago, I was at an event with him where he spoke very passionately on issues of human rights in Pakistan, India and Afghanistan”, she said of Bhullar, a devout Sikh. We thank you for your support during this hard time and ask for privacy.
In a statement, Nenshi said: “He was a powerful community advocate from a young age and first elected to the Alberta legislature at 28”.
Bhullar had been minister of human services in the government of former premier Alison Redford, held the infrastructure portfolio under Prentice, and was most recently serving as the Tory party’s critic on finance, the Treasury Board and infrastructure.
“He demanded excellence of himself and those around him”.
During this time in office, Bhullar worked to build better systems for children, fought to change unfair cell phone rules, and passed laws to protect consumers.
“I know of no person in public life who cared more deeply and passionately about serving others”, said Prentice.
“I believe all Albertans are poorer for the fact we will not”. “We have lost our colleague, Calgary-Greenway has lost a friend and effective voice in the legislature, and most of all, we have all lost a passionate advocate for Alberta”.
His family is still making arrangements.
