California Hillary Elector Files Suit to Stop Donald Trump
This round, of course, it’s the disparity between the Electoral College vote and the popular vote that animates Dionne: “For the next two and probably four years”, he writes, “a majority of Americans will be governed by politicians largely elected by a minority of us”.
Second, if something were to happen to the president-elect that rendered him or her incapable of assuming office before the Electoral College voted, electors could name a successor with relatively little difficulty. This apparent disconnect between the democratic ideal of the people playing a direct role in government and the reality of the system in practice has fueled the continuing debate over the Electoral College, and led many people over the years to echo Jackson’s call to abolish it.
And in 1876, Spahr noted, some deals among politicos resulted in Rutherford B. Hayes being elected president even though his opponent, Samuel Tilden, at first was credited with winning both the popular and Electoral College vote.
Unless something occurs that has never happened before, the victor will be Donald Trump. If they don’t, it’s very possibly the end of the road for our republic.
Last month some 2 million more voters cast ballots for Hillary Clinton than for Trump as people across the country went to the polls. Moreover, if Dionne’s touchstone is the “founders’ intentions”, what better evidence than in Hamilton’s Federalist 68, “The Mode of Electing the President”: “A small number of persons, selected by their fellow-citizens from the general mass, will be most likely to possess the information and discernment requisite to such complicated [tasks]”.
Another potential weakness in the Electoral College system is the existence of so-called “faithless electors”, who for whatever reason choose to vote against their state’s chosen candidate.
Obama Officially Declared Winner of 2008 Election. What would happen next is that the Electoral College would function as it was created to function and as its function was explained by Alexander Hamilton in Federalist 68… All but a few are Democratic activists or donors from states such as California, New York and MA.
In a Missoulian guest column on November 9, University of Miami Associate Professor Joseph Uscinski acknowledges the grievance of many Americans that the current system allows the loser of the popular vote to be elected by the Electoral College. And after reports that the Central Intelligence Agency concluded there was pro-Donald Trump interference in the election by Russian Federation, I wouldn’t be surprised if a simple vote count turns into something much more dramatic on January 6. That necessitated a change in the Constitution after the slate of Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr won in 1800 and the electoral vote ended in a tie, requiring the House of Representatives to choose the president. They reflect a socialist, global, politically correct identity politics promoted in mainstream media and on college campuses, claiming Donald Trump is a “racist”, “misogynist” and “xenophobe”. And I also understand why the Hamilton Electors, Democrats themselves, are pushing to substitute another Republican for Trump: They can not possibly entice the Republican electors to vote for Clinton; if they are to have any chance of enlisting Republican electors to help block Trump, they must offer the prospect of electing another Republican instead. Now that’s quite a lofty goal, but that’s what we’re aiming for. I fear we will be seeing none of this.
With even Republicans turning against Donald Trump following the revelations about Russia’s role in US elections, it is now more probable than ever that the most unprecedented election in USA history may still have one last twist left in it. To help their candidate! The election was ultimately decided in the House of Representatives.
When does knowing about this and doing nothing rise to the level of Treason? The result was equity in the electoral process.
First, there have been close elections with respect to the popular vote, while the electoral vote was definitive. But some electors believe the risk of punishment is worth it.
