California police shoot, kill man in commercial area
In June 2014, four officers shot and killed Glen Griggs, 53, who ignored officers’ order to drop the long BB gun he was brandishing.
Hunter said police have not determined if the suspect fired any shots at the officer, whose name was not released.
One of the men was shot, and one fled from police, he said. Two suspects in or near the vehicle ran from officers and officers pursued them behind some buildings across the street from the hotel, he said.
Police on Monday released more details about the fatal officer-involved shooting, including the revelation that one of the men who successfully fled officers may be wanted in Fresno County on suspicion of murder.
Sunnyvale public safety Capt. Shawn Ahearn tells the San Jose Mercury News (http://bayareane.ws/1WwrUAQ) officers had been responding to a report of suspicious circumstances at a motel when the shooting occurred Saturday.
A second suspect had fled north on San Aleso. By 11 p.m. police the house-to-house search was called off.
Officers were looking for a thin black man, about 20 years old, wearing blue jeans and red or orange shirt, Ahearn said.
Kat Walsh, a Mountain View attorney who was eating at Hobee’s restaurant in the area, said diners there saw numerous police vehicles, ambulances and other public safety officials. “He’s very risky and that’s why we’re taking this very seriously”, Ahearn said. “And then we saw them take one guy into custody”.
“He didn’t look like he was resisting”, she said.
“The officer confronted the suspect in the bushes at less than 10 feet and ordered him to drop the weapon”, Hunter said. Ahearn said one was a loaded high capacity magazine and the other was a handgun.
Police said Weber had taken a pack of cigarettes at knifepoint from a clerk at Grewalz Liquor & Groceries at 1125 Tasman Drive. A third suspect remained at the scene and cooperated with officers.
Officers initiated lifesaving efforts, but the man died at the scene.
The Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety today identified a 19-year-old suspect still being sought who is associated with a suspect killed by an officer over the weekend.
