California Powerball victor: Report of nurse’s big win called a prank
The couple came forward on yesterday with a winning ticket for this week’s record US$1.6 billion Powerball lottery jackpot.
A Tennessee couple claims to be one of the winners, and they shocked “Today” show viewers by revealing they haven’t even cashed in their ticket yet!
John Robinson says he bought the ticket and three others Wednesday night while on the way home.
“I didn’t know exactly what do to, ” John said.
“Now I’ll be nervous because everybody knows, ” John Robinson said.
Lisa, who works in a dermatologist’s office, told her boss she’d be in on Monday.
The massive $1.5 billion Powerball jackpot will be split between the Robinsons and two other ticket holders.
Traverso who has seen the prize checks said they often seem fake. They say they want to be private people after the lottery frenzy is over.
Lupe Quijada, a 78-year-old Chino Hills resident, used to buy lottery tickets at the 7-Eleven every Wednesday and Saturday with her late husband. All three states with winners have laws requiring their names to be released publicly, according to the Powerball website. So far lottery officials said that hasn’t happened.
She stayed up to watch Wednesday night’s draw, carefully writing down the numbers.
California has the biggest reward for the ticket seller – $1 million. “‘John! John! You gotta check these numbers!” she said.

It was all an embarrassing misunderstanding, the woman’s daughter told the Los Angeles Times, asking that the family not be identified.
They said they were yet to make plans on how to spend the money, though Mr Robinson admitted to being scared about managing his new wealth. “He said, “In the new year, everyone wants an extra bit of hope” and he wanted to give everyone that bit of hope”.
“It’s just sheer excitement and surprise”, Naifeh said.
