California prosecutors charge man with murder in pier death
“His accused assailant had been arrested more than half a dozen times, but was still in the country”, Barletta said. Council members rejected any such cooperation in 2012.
Steinle’s death has offered ammunition to GOP critics of Obama administration policies, including presidential candidate Donald Trump, who’s cited it to justify his claims that many immigrants are criminals.
San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi strongly defended his office’s release of Sanchez and pointed the finger back at US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Later, he said he stepped on the T-shirt when he sat on a bench and noticed there was something heavy inside of it, which led him to unwrap the gun and subsequently set it off.
When this story broke last week, one question nagged at me: Why would the feds release a career criminal on an old marijuana charge to San Francisco, instead of deporting him? “Suddenly I heard that boom boom, three times”.
Despite that request, San Francisco authorities let him go in April after the drug charges were dropped.
In Sanchez’s case, ICE only asked for a detainer, which the sheriff said, under city law, isn’t good enough.
The subject has come up repeatedly in Alameda and Santa Clara counties, although usually tied to requests to hold a violator for ICE officials.
It turned out that the suspect, Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, had seven felony convictions stretching back to 1991 and had been deported from the United States five times.
At the same time it plays into a larger, politically charged immigration debate between federal authorities and local jurisdictions.
ICE officials took custody of Lopez-Sanchez in March, when he was remanded to the agency after serving a multi-year federal prison sentence for felony re-entry following deportation, ICE spokesperson Gillian Christensen said in a statement.
Sanchez admitted in an interview with ABC7 News in San Francisco that he did, in fact, shoot 32-year-old Kate Steinle on Pier 14, a popular tourist attraction.
The statement continued, “There has been much discussion about San Francisco’s Sanctuary City Policy in the aftermath of Kathryn’s death”. On Monday there were prayers for Steinle at the spot where she was killed last week. “We’re not asking local cops to do our job”. “But we have a shared goal of making the community a safer place”. “We’re not seeking to turn over illegal immigrants to federal custody, ” said one San Francisco law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the case is unfolding. But jurisdictions that fall under that controversial term – supporters oppose it – generally have policies or laws that limit the extent to which law enforcement and other government employees will go to assist the federal government on immigration matters. They said he should have been deported before the crime.
“They literally have a huge problem showing up”, said Cortese.
“In my view, this type of situation highlights the importance of the direction where we are headed”, he said when asked about the California murder. In absence of a comprehensive federal immigration policy, this is why it is a growing trend of municipalities in devising their own ICE relationship policies that require a real legal instrument.
