Call of Duty World League Announced
The Call of Duty: Black Ops III campaign deploys players into a future world, where bio-technology coupled with cybernetic enhancements has given rise to a new breed of Black Ops soldier.
Microsoft and Activision already have some of the biggest multiplayer first-person shooter games to work with, they just need to quickly build a strong, professional, competitive community around them. Perhaps Call of Duty competitions could be among the programming.
“While our global fan base of players range from casual to professional, they all share a desire to compete- some at the highest levels”, Treyarch’s Mark Lamia said in a statement. This is triple the amount that the previous Call of Duty prize offered. A total of $3 million in prize money is spread between series payouts, LAN events, and the Championship itself.
Activision is the latest video game publisher to start taking e-sports seriously.
The Challenge Division will be the proving grounds for casual and aspiring amateur players. The duo will create a new eSports league to be broadcast exclusively on TBS.
“The Challenge Division will give amateur teams a chance to compete through a series of official LAN events and secure a place at the Call of Duty Championship“.
Next year’s Call of Duty Championship will be in the autumn rather than spring to accommodate for the new structure. “Since then, eSports has become a global phenomenon with more than 120 million people watching online competitive gaming each year”. The first, the Pro Division, will call upon professional teams from around the world to compete in a regular season to earn a spot in the Call of Duty Championship.
Call of Duty: Black Ops III will be released November6, 2015 for PC, Xbox One and PS4, as well as Xbox 360 and PS3.
