Callum Smith v Rocky Fielding weigh
(Callum Smith seen here with a 1000 yard stare ahead of his hard match-up tonight against Rocky Fielding in Liverpool) By Scott Gilfoid: Tonight the super middleweight division will be weeded out a little when the highly hyped #1 WBC, #10 IBF, #13 WBO, #14 WBA Callum Smith (17-0, 12 KOs) faces #5 IBF, #10 WBA, #10 WBC, #12 WBO Rocky Fielding (21-0, 12 KOs) in a scrap for the vacant British 168lb title at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, UK.
Callum, the youngest of four boxing brothers, follows oldest brother Paul, who was also British super middleweight champion, Stephen, who won the British featherweight and super-featherweight titles, and Liam, who won the British light-welterweight bauble, before going on to win the World Boxing Organisation world title.
Fielding’s success proved a cruel irony though as pushing forward, he was caught by a short, sharp left that put him down again and then, with just 19 seconds before he could enjoy the safety of his corner, it was all over.
The pre-fight underdog fought back, and seemed to have cleared his head following the early setback, but then suffered a heavy knockdown with a left hook as he tried to respond.
“I think a lot has been made of the Brian Vera win than was necessary”. “Rocky is in the way of that and I have a job to do”.
Smith smelt blood and went for the kill unloading off both channels forcing the disorganized Fielding back to the ropes, seemingly unable to regain his senses and respond or even tie his opponent up. “I take advice off them every day and it makes me a better fighter”. I am here now and I have got to stay here.
I hate to say it, but that’s not going to happen. “There was a goal I set myself and now I have done that, but my aim now is to become world champion”. “I think I benefit from having three brothers all fighting at a good level”.
It was certainly a night to remember for the Smith family, in particular Callum, who was in awe of the atmosphere. When I’m in the ring and we’re getting it on and people are screaming my name, it’ll push me more. “I know it was only one round but I would like to think they went home happy”. I think if I was to fight him and knock him out, I wouldn’t get the credit that Rocky has got for doing it. He looked good doing it and got the win he needed, but I think he made a bit more out of it than he should have. “I knew I was in for a great fight”.
I think Burns is deluded when he says he belongs in big fights. “That’s not the end of me, no chance”.
