Calm at Minneapolis protest site a night after shooting
At one point, a group went into Macy’s at Herald Square, and at another point, a group tried blocking the Lincoln Tunnel, police said.
Martin says the shooting helped strengthen his presence at the occupation.
A member of the federal group identified his office as the department’s Community Relations Service. His name will be released upon charging.
“This is a call to action and also a solidarity march to support our comrades in Minneapolis and also to support our comrades who have been fighting for justice in Chicago”, she said.
“I stood behind Black Lives Matter Minneapolis with these requests and have echoed them at every opportunity”, Ellison said.
More than 150 people are gathered in front of the police station, talking and eating around campfires.
Grimm said organizers have a large Thanksgiving meal planned for Thursday. On one night, Grimm said, online chatter included a post stating that a pie had been left at the protest site with rat poison. “We ain’t turning around, but we’re here fighting for justice”.
A funeral was held Monday for an unarmed man shot dead by Minneapolis police – as authorities announced that a fourth person is being held in connection with a shooting near a “Black Lives Matter” protest following the death.
Then, the men turned and opened fire into a crowd once they were out of sight of the police station, Martin said. Scarsella told police he accidentally pulled the trigger on his handgun while cleaning it. No one was injured and Scarsella was not arrested. Three of the men are white and one is Asian. None suffered life-threatening wounds.
This story has been corrected to correct racial descriptions of the men in custody.
Tuesday’s violent attack on the protesters, carried out by three white men in their 20’s who have since been arrested, have increased the tension in Minneapolis.
Clark’s funeral service was preceded by a two-hour viewing, during which a seemingly unending stream of family filed past the casket.
Police dispute that claim, saying Clark was trying to grab an officer’s firearm, and that they were justified in using deadly force.
Hundreds of people attended the funeral for 24-year-old Jamar Clark, who was shot and killed in an encounter with police last week.
According to police, Clark was shot after he struggled with officers. Howell said what’s needed now is a special state legislative session to address the needs of Minnesota’s minority community. “Jamar, your life did and does have goal”, said Bishop Richard D. Howell Jr., a bishop at the Shiloh Temple.
“I’m still hurt”, said his sister, Sharice Burns. As the cars stopped in the protester encampment, people in cars also raised their fists and hung out of windows. Drew Evans, superintendent of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, said that authorities were still working to determine whether Clark was handcuffed when he died.
By Tuesday night, all seemed peaceful.
“The Jamar Clark family has urged us to start thinking about an exit strategy, and I think that would be wise”.
Demonstrators called on police to release video footage of the shooting.
Clark was shot November 15.
Council President Barb Johnson said the shooting Monday evening was a “continuation of a stressful time for the neighbors that live in the area surrounding the 4th Precinct”, adding that “they deserve some peace and some rest”.
At the visitation, leaflets shared details about Clark, who was the youngest of 10 children and liked to swim, fish, listen to music and take trips to Charlotte, N.C.
