Cam Newton Named 2015 MVP
The Carolina Panthers quarterback was named both the NFL MVP and the NFL Offensive Player of the Year on Saturday night during the NFL Honors ceremony at the Billy Graham Civic Auditorium. However, the Panthers and Newton met their match in Super Bowl 50 as the Broncos defense absolutely destroyed Carolina for the full 60 minutes on the way to a 24-10 win and a hoist of the Lombardi Trophy for Denver.
The 26-year-old finished the regular season with 3,837 passing yards, 636 rushing yards and a total of 45 touchdowns as the Panthers finished top of the NFC South division en route to Super Bowl 50.
Cecil Newton Sr., Cam’s father, accepted the awards of his son’s behalf.
Watt has now equaled New York Giants and Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor for most DPOY awards in a career, but his third victory in the last four years came at the expense of the Panthers bid for four major awards.
Kansas City Chiefs safety Eric Berry took out the National Football League comeback player of the year after beating cancer.
Joining Favre in the Canton, Ohio, shrine are coach Tony Dungy, wide receiver Marvin Harrison, pass-rusher Kevin Greene, tackle Orlando Pace, quarterback Ken Stabler, guard Dick Stanfel and former San Francisco 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo, Jr.
“This is nice, but that’s not why I do it – for awards – but to help people”, Boldin said. Rams running back Todd Gurley was named the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year, and Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters won the Defensive Rookie of the Year Award.
Gurley missed all of training camp and the first two league games recovering from a torn ACL he incurred at Georgia in the 2014 season. “All my emotions are just pushing out”.
Denver defensive coordinator Wade Phillips was named Assistant Coach of the Year.
