Cam Newton Tears Down Pro-Packers Sign; Fan Reports ‘Theft’ To Police
Prior to Sunday’s 37-29 win over the Green Bay Packers, Newton saw a Packers sign hanging from the stadium walls.
Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton warming up before the game against Green Bay last Sunday. “… We take pride in having an edge and playing in Bank of America Stadium and playing in front of the Carolinas every week, and it’s something that I feel it was my due diligence to protect” the stadium.
“There’s a Green Bay banner in Bank of America Stadium”, Newton said. “I would have liked it if he would have signed the banner that they sent”.
“It went from a fun event to I was disgusted”, he said.
“It’s no disrespect to nobody”.
“You’re not about to sit up here and sell a Whopper at no McDonalds, know what I’m saying?”
The owner of the banner told stadium police it was stolen, according to the Fayetteville Observer.
Instead, the family states that Newton tore the banner out of their hands and took it back into the locker room, assuming that it was destroyed. Dobs had permission from stadium officials, provided the banner wasn’t permanently affixed to the stadium. “Give credit to Carolina for the fine season they’ve got going 8-0, but we’re focused on getting better and we didn’t take the step that we wanted to today”, said head coach Mike McCarthy.
“He ran up to us and ripped the banner out of our hands…” said Dobs, a retired Army Command Sergeant Major who served for 27-years.
The Carolina Panthers said they would prefer not to go Lambeau Field in the NFC playoffs.
Newton continues to add to his legacy as one of the best dual threat quarterbacks in the game. Friends gave Colin and his family tickets and he was able to attend the game.
When Cam Newton came toward him, Dobs thought Newton was going to autograph his sign.
“We make it tough, I don’t know why”, Panthers tight end Greg Olsen said.
Dobs said this week that security was so tight Sunday that he had to open his banner for examination multiple times at various security points before being allowed to bring it into the stands.
He got more than just being on TV, walking away with a very memorable souvenir.
