Cameroon boss Broos wary of ‘difficult’ World Cup draw
Bafana Bafana are placed in Group D as the African qualifiers were drawn together on Friday from which the winners go to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russian Federation.
Nigeria Super Eagles will have to face some outstanding odds on their path to a sixth World Cup appearance as they have been handed a hard-hitting group or better tagged as the “group of death” enroute the 2018 Fifa World Cup billed for Russian Federation.
Just one of Nigeria, Cameroon and Algeria, who featured at both South Africa 2010 and Brazil 2014 World Cups, will grab the ticket to Russian Federation, which means two of the teams will miss out.
The Algerian team suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of eventual winners Germany in the first knockout round, while Nigeria also went out at that stage, losing 2-0 to France.
Famed French coach Herve Renard, the only man to win the Cup of Nations with two countries, is now in charge of Morocco and they will come up against his former team, Ivory Coast, in Group C.
However, the tables have been turned in the 24 months since the last World Cup, and it is Nigeria and Algeria whose outlooks are bleakest.
Senegal’s Teranga Lions, which reached the World Cup quarter -finals in its debut in 2002, head Group D that also includes South Africa’s Bafana Bafana, Burkina Faso’s Etalons and Cape Verde’s Blue Sharks.
Ghana made it to the last World Cup and they have been drawn in Group E with Egypt, Congo and Uganda.
They are in an wide-open group with Tunisia, veterans of four World Cups, Guinea and Libya, who are still banned from hosting games because of the security situation in the country.
Only the team finishing top of the standings in each group qualifies for Russian Federation.
