Cameroonian Troops Kill 100 Suspected Terrorists, Rescues Hostages
Cameroon’s army claims to have killed 100 Boko Haram terrorists and freed 900 hostages over the weekend. The Nigerian militant group Boko Haram claimed responsibility for the attack, which happened near the village of Dakasoye, south of Kano.
Ryan Cummings, chief analyst for Africa at crisis management company red24, said: “An operation like this may have hit one cell but that does not create a major problem for Boko Haram’s ability to execute attacks in other areas”.
Since the increased terror threat lookouts have put their lives in danger with one civilian telling the AFP that, “We’re on high alert day and night to protect our city from Boko Haram kamikaze attacks”. “Nine hundred hostages detained by Boko Haram were freed”, army spokesman Colonel Didier Badjeck announced on Wednesday.
Cameroon has suffered regular cross-border attacks in the Far-North Region, including several suicide bombings.
He said large supplies of arms and munitions as well as black-and-white Islamic State flags were seized in the operations.
Musa added that the operation should have happened as early as July or August, when the deployment of a multinational force was first announced.
“The apprehension of the suspects is a boost to the fight against terrorism and insurgency in that they were assisting with investigation that would lead to the arrest of more suspected terrorists in the camp and elsewhere”.
The Islamic Movement in Nigeria also said that a second attacker was arrested before he could detonate his bomb.
By stepping up operations, he warned that Boko Haram could retaliate by carry out more suicide bomings.
The militants were believed to have travelled from Nigeria to attack the town, after Cameroon swore its allegiance to other African nations to rid Boko Haram.
