Camille Cosby deposed in defamation case, returns next month
On Sunday night, a judge ruled against an emergency motion from Cosby’s lawyers to postpone her testimony.
On Monday, the attorney for the MA plaintiffs, Joe Cammarata, told NBC News what he wants to hear from Camille Cosby herself. They’re among 50 women who have leveled sexual misconduct allegations against Cosby.
In interviews, she’s referred to him as “a kind man, a generous man, a amusing man, and a wonderful husband, father and friend”.
Her attempts at fighting the deposition were in vain, however, and Camille Cosby was finally forced to submit to the will of the court and be deposed today.
Camille Cosby and her lawyers met with lawyers for the seven women suing her husband for about seven or eight hours Monday.
The lawsuit was filed in Springfield, an hour from where the Cosbys have a home in Shelburne Falls.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 8.
U.S. District Judge Mark G. Mastroianni ruled earlier this month that Camille Cosby would not have to answer questions protected by the marital disqualification rule, which states that a person does not have to disclose intimate conversations with his or her spouse unless it’s a case involving the marriage or parenting. Among a series of legal actions across the country against other women who have accused him of assaulting them, them actor has also filed an appeal to stop the recently instigated criminal case against him from the 2004 assault of Constand from going forward. Cosby has denied he sexually assaulted any women. The deposition was originally expected to take place on January 6, but was pushed back until now.
Black curtains were hung to cordon off the wing of a MA hotel where Bill Cosby’s wife, Camille, was ordered to give a deposition in a defamation lawsuit filed by seven women who claim the comedian sexually assaulted them.
Bill has denied all sexual assault accusations against him, which led to Tamara Green, Therese Serignese, Linda Traitz, Louisa Moritz, Barbara Bowman, Joan Tarshis and Angela Leslie to file suit claiming that his denial of such allegations are both false and defamatory.
The deposition is being held at the Springfield Marriott. Cosby’s defense said the decision failed to consider the impact of the February 11 ruling, calling it “clearly erroneous”.
“It’s fruitful in a sense and frustrating in a sense”, Cammarata said, referring to the fact that the deposition wasn’t completed Monday.
