Campaign against gender violence begins
The theme for this year’s campaign is “From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World: Make Education Safe for All”, which organisers hope will lay emphasis on education as a fundamental human right and a key tool in helping the girl child and the woman to avoid violence. These numbers only reflect cases where the victim was courageous enough to report the crime to police.
“Among these reported cases, 52% are females under the age of 16 and 36% above the age of 18”.
She said violence against children is a worrying situation, which needs to be checked by all to ensure the safety of the pupils, especially girls.
“Here at Jakarta we are joining strengths to focus on elimination of any kind of gender violence”.
“Providing a forum in which organizers can develop and share new and effective strategies and demonstrating the solidarity of women around the world organizing against violence”, he said.
The walkathon is held in conjunction with the United Nations “Unite to End Violence Against Women” campaign and the “Orange the World” global campaign (orange symbolizing a bright future) with 16 days of activism.
“Violence against women is an issue that transcends race, culture, ethnicity, religion and economic background”, said FWCC coordinator Shamima Ali.
“We want to sensitise the population on the 16 days of activism, the goal of the 16 days of activism, the importance of these 16 days of activism, the reasoning behind the 16 days of activism”. Wearing a purple ribbon is a personal pledge to never commit, support or tolerate violence against women or children.
Community members can also show support by being a volunteer at local NGOs and community groups who support abused women and children as many organisations need assistance from the public. We are proud to work with the Ministry of Education and Skills Development to train teachers on GBV, review sexual harassment policies, and design standard operating procedures for addressing GBV in a school setting. Prevention should start early in life, by educating and working with young boys and girls promoting respectful relationships and gender equality. And when we stand up and no longer tolerate the intolerable.
