Campaigners in EU vote take on final day of campaigning
Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron meets supporters on a walkabout after he addressed a Vote …
Much of the debate has hinged on the economy, immigration, and what some perceive as overbearing European Union bureaucratic control over issues better left to individual states. An Opinium Research poll of 3000 Britons was just as close, with Leave getting a 45 per cent share, Remain 44 per cent and undecided with 9 per cent. European Union membership is good for business and good for British jobs.
The former premier’s impassioned speech, in which he evoked Shakespeare as well as European conflicts through the ages, earned him praise from Cameron, whose Conservatives ousted Brown’s Labour Party in the 2010 general election.
Mr Gill dismissed what he called “doom and gloom we’re all going to end up living in caves” from the Remain campaign as “absolutely ridiculous”.
He said if they left, we’d need to protect the free trade negotiations underway with the European Union, but also open up direct channels to Britain. He bristled at the notion that it would be heading in the wrong direction if it stayed in, and rejected the charge that the European Union was a moribund institution.
“This Thursday can be our country’s independence day”, Johnson, seen as a leading contender to replace Cameron if Leave wins, told the cheering audience in a venue more often used to stage rock concerts.
“The way the European market is structured, if there is any fragmentation, then it would certainly have an effect on economies that have dealings with that market”, Mr. Lavasa said at an event organised by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
In the joint letter they say “businesses and their employees benefit massively from being able to trade inside the world’s largest single market”.
The betting markets solidly stood by the “remain” side. A poster released by Mr Farage depicting immigrants arriving in Europe has been called racist.
Shanghai rose 0.9 per cent and Seoul gained 0.5 per cent by the close, while Singapore added 0.7 percent in late trade. “We should take back control and look after our own society”.
Three years later, in 1975, Britain held a first referendum on its membership in the EEC, which at the time had only nine members.
The 1975 referendum showed support of more than 67 percent for EEC membership.
Cox, who would have been 42 on June 22, was shot and stabbed to death in northern England as she was campaigning for the “remain” camp. Vote “remain” on June 23.
For some historical perspective, the Scottish referendum on independence saw 85% of the electorate take part, while only 35.6% did so in the last EU Parliament elections in 2014 (in which the UK Independence Party did well).
A vote to remain would trigger a rise in sterling and relief in Western capitals, unleash pent-up investment in Britain but still leave the country – and the Conservatives – bitterly divided, especially if the margin of victory were thin.
French President Francois Hollande warned an exit would be “irreversible” while German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she wanted Britain to stay but that the decision was down to the British people.
Opinion polls indicate a tiny lead for the “Remain” camp led by Prime Minister David Cameron.
But after an initial shock, the prolonged economic uncertainty following a win for Brexit would hit the United Kingdom economy much harder than its promoters expect. The official result is due some time after 0600 GMT on Friday but partial results and turnout figures from 382 counting centers will be announced from about 0100 GMT.
