Campbell sisters dazzle as Australian women break 4×100 meter relay world record
Sunshine Coast product Brittany Elmslie and her team-mates have produced a stunning world record-breaking performance to capture gold in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay at the Rio Olympics.
Hosszu, five times a world champion but without a medal from three previous Olympics, demolished the world record by 2.07 seconds in the final of the women’s 400 metres individual medley on Saturday.
Australians set a world record to claim gold over the U.S.in the 4x100m freestyle relay with a time of three minutes, 30.65 seconds.
The World Judo Championship bronze medalist is one of Israel’s best hopes for a medal. After heats, the Australian was asked about an incident in warm-up earlier in the week in which Sun was said to have splashed Horton with water in an attempt to distract him.
It meant that after one day of competition in the Rio pool, Australia have already doubled their tally of golds from a disappointing Games in London in 2012.
Led by current 100-meter freestyle world record holder Cate Campbell, the Australians will be looking for their third Olympic gold in the event over the past four Games.
The Americans had led at half-way, but Bronte Campbell overhauled Vollmer on the third leg and handed over a lead her sister never looked like surrendering to Ledecky.
Hagino, the bronze medallist in 2012, won with a time of four minutes, 6.05 seconds to end a United States stranglehold on the event dating back to 1996. He set an eye-popping new world record of 57.55sec in the men’s 100m breaststroke heats – his first ever Olympic swim.
The Campbell sisters sacrificed their adolescence to get where they are now, and collecting Olympic gold together will be hard to top.
The 19-year-old will also compete in the 200-, 400- and 800m freestyle events, along with the 4x200m freestyle relay. “It was safe changeovers and “swim your own race” and focus on yourself more than anything and that’s what got us through and got the job done”.
