Can Alabama’s Derrick Henry trample Florida the way he did Auburn?
You can argue that running Henry as much as Alabama has but at the same time, he is unquestionably the Tide’s biggest weapon and Alabama is committed to running him until someone proves they can stop him.
ABOUT AUBURN (6-5, 2-5): Johnson passed for two touchdowns and rushed for two more in last Saturday’s victory over Idaho but his overall season play – eight touchdowns, seven interceptions – has been shaky and White had supplanted him as the starter prior to suffering his knee injury.
Henry’s lead is hardly safe, however.
The other two are a couple of guys from the 80’s named Herschel and Bo. “Henry’s ability to get to and through the hole in a flash projects best in a traditional power-blocking scheme that limits his dancing at the line of scrimmage”, Rang wrote. But after the Tide’s win over Auburn on Saturday, Henry is at least the most prolific.
Nothing will be for certain until December 12 when the Heisman Trophy will be announced.
While bigger goals still await, Alabama (11-1) accomplished one of its biggest challenges of the season on Saturday, a win over hated rival Auburn (6-6). But it was the relentless imposition of his will in a fourth quarter that saw Henry carry 19 times for 114 yards, including Alabama’s final 14 offensive plays, that will go down in history. A teaching moment to be sure, as lapses in judgment will cause big problems as the Tide moves into the postseason.
“What they’re doing now is getting the ball in the playmakers’ hands and being very efficient in what they’re doing”, said Florida coach Jim McElwain, who spent four seasons in Tuscaloosa as Saban’s offensive coordinator.
In 2011 Alabama won the BCS title with Trent Richardson running for a school-record 1,679 yards and 21 TDs (also a school record).
McElwain said the “juice” of an SEC title game could be as intense as a CFP game. He’s coming, New York.
Aleva was noted for his silence in the days leading up to the finale, but said that was because he wanted to wait until the regular season was completed before making any kind of statement. The Tigers survived a 37-32 scare against SC earlier in the day. But Watson led his offense on a 10-play, 75-yard scoring drive on the ensuing series, capping it with a three-yard touchdown run. What sweet, sweet revenge it was for a game that was largely decided by field goals.
That said, the two could be on a short list of teams with 5-7 records that could make it to a bowl. Peyton Barber only gained 29-yards against the Tide.
Derrick Henry carried a huge load vs. Auburn. The performance marked Cook’s eighth 100-yard outing of the season.
“As I was running, I was like, ‘Man, no way, ‘” Smith said.
Even with freshman receiver Calvin Ridley emerging as a playmaker and quarterback Jake Coker cutting down on mistakes, Henry clearly has been the go-to guy.
“What Derrick has done for this team”, Saban said, per ESPN’s Ivan Maisel.
“I think you’ll see a little bit more step up on offense”, Alabama fan Paul Lammon says about next week’s matchup against the Florida Gators “Our defense is pretty solid”. Danny Wuerffel’s 401 yards and six touchdown passes haven’t been beat, nor have Reidel Anthony’s 11 catches for 171 yards. Players like Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield and Clemson Tigers quarterback Deshaun Watson are still in the conversation.
AIR WATCH: Goff’s 542 yards passing were the most in the country for the week, and his 4,252 yards passing for the season is a Cal school record.
