Can Wall’s Wizards stop Golden State’s winning run?
Wall scored a season-best 41 points in the shadows as Curry shot 13 of 14 for 36 points in the best first half of his career.
They led by 17 points in the first quarter and 74-60 at halftime.
The good news for the Washington Wizards is that the Golden State Warriors experienced issues against lesser competition on the first two stops of their road trip.
Curry, who once lit the Garden up with 11 three-pointers and 54 points in February of 2013, had a rare off night with 13 points on 5-for-17 shooting. Curry is averaging 4.9 three-pointers per game this season. It may be one of those nights for Curry when he just can’t miss. “You can’t mess around with the basketball gods chasing the record when the game doesn’t call for it”.
Washington played with more spirit than in recent games, but could not keep up with the defending champions.
The Warriors meanwhile, enter this game on the back of seven straight victories. The closest to bad form we’ve seen from them this season in terms of results has been two losses in three games.
Draymond Green had 12 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds, setting a Warriors single-season record with his 10th triple-double. They never were able to catch up, though, because Curry dropped in 7 points in seven minutes of the fourth quarter, while teammates Klay Thompson and Shaun Livingston combined for 17 to hold off the Wizards.
Curry’s 51 points tied the Verizon Center record for most individual points, matching Michael Jordan and Gilbert Arenas.
Curry didn’t even take a shot on Golden State’s first six possessions.
The two teams meet again on March 29th at Golden State.
But the damage he did in the first half was where his game went from exceptional to utterly devastating.
The Warriors (44-4) scored 64 points over the second and third quarters to make up for their poor opening and notch a seventh successive win.
“They’ve shown why they’re the best shooters in the league, and their team, they’re able to knock down shots, but I think they’re a beatable team”, Wall said. Jeremy Lin scored 24 points and assisted on eight occasions for the Hornets.
Washington will play without coach Randy Wittman for the second straight game after his brother’s death last week, and assistant Don Newman will assume the head coaching duties.
Golden State stayed 12 games clear atop the Pacific Division ahead of the Los Angeles Clippers, who recorded an impressive victory over Chicago.
The Warriors were at the White House on Thursday, where President Barack Obama honored them for winning the 2015 National Basketball Association title.
“Consider this a symbol of an offer that’s coming”, Kerr said as he presented Obama with the jersey and the president demonstrated his shooting form.
