Canada introduces legislation for marijuana possession
That’s reportedly when the Liberal government’s much-anticipated marijuana legislation is expected to be introduced.
“It’s a very important day”, Parliamentary Secretary Bill Blair told members of the press this morning. The rate of cannabis use is extremely high in young people.
Aphria chief executive Vic Neufeld said the legislation is a good beginning, but leaves a lot of blanks to be filled, such as more explanation on permitted marketing and related practices.
But it won’t mean much to the thousands of Canadians going to Arizona every year except for the possibility of slightly more hassle at the worldwide border by suspicious customs officers, he said.
Police have warned Canadians that, for now, using cannabis remains illegal and they will continue to clamp down on those breaking the law.
It would set the minimum age to purchase cannabis at 18, but provinces can increase that minimum age how they see fit. It is not yet known whether those future regulations will allow the sale of sweets.
“We are pleased to see that the new legislation proposed today has a strong emphasis on harm reduction, consistent with recommendations put forward by CNA during the task force’s consultation on the legalization, regulation and restriction of access to marijuana”.
On Tuesday, Toronto police released preliminary data from the program that showed of the 208 people they tested – who were volunteers because legislation would have to be passed to use the devices – nine tested positive for drugs. As Ottawa works toward squeezing out illegal producers of marijuana, federal officials are anxious that a shortage of cannabis would hurt their plans in the initial stages of legalization.
“Brands also ensure accountability, encouraging producers and retailers to provide quality products and support in the new market”. The money made from taxing marijuana – a $21 billion industry, according to reports – pads state’s coffers, pays for schools and other infrastructure and some say it even curbs the illegal drug trade. Lawmakers who bemoaned the club bill’s demise cited U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who has hinted that states violating federal drug law won’t be tolerated.
But with no details yet from the Trump administration about how a crackdown would look, states are skittish about making national headlines that could be interpreted as thumbing their noses at federal drug law.
U.S voters in California, Massachusetts, Maine and Nevada voted past year to approve the use of recreational marijuana, joining Colorado, Washington, Oregon and Alaska.
Federal ministers said Thursday that the pricing and taxation of recreational pot remain to be worked out with the provinces and producers. If the legislation becomes law, adults could have up to 30 grams of cannabis on their person and grow up to four plants in their home.
That decision has created a year of legal turmoil across the country, as local and provincial police were forced to raid unlicensed dispensaries across the country and criminalize Canadians despite the fact that marijuana legalization is imminent.
Canadian Realtor Pederson spends “months and months” in Arizona each year. Canada is a signatory to three global treaties that require countries to criminalize recreational marijuana, and will likely need to amend its involvement.
