Canada loses to USA in men’s Olympic curling semifinal
It was an extremely close match throughout as Switzerland and Great Britain went head to head in the men’s tie breaker game. It’s a moment etched into American sports folklore.
But was it a miracle?
Kennedy is the third for the Canadian men’s curling team at the Olympic Winter Games, a team that won its final round-robin game on Wednesday afternoon to qualify for the semifinals. It’s not a miracle on ice. Shuster and Co. took motivation from watching that women’s hockey game before taking the ice themselves. Monday, he tied his best shooting performance of the round robin, making 82 percent of his attempts.
“Hell, yeah”, he said, smiling. “The sun will come up, and we’ve got to try to win a bronze medal for Canada”.
China got back one point in the second end, but lost four more points in the third due to a series of mistakes. And if you’re wondering, the last (and only time) Team USA medaled in curling was in Turin in 2006, when Pete Fenson was the skip. “The U.S. made very few mistakes today, and they played very well”, said China coach Tan Weidong after the game.
Shuster’s victory follows a particularly rocky Olympic path. To find itself in position to win a medal was incredible and the team was carrying some serious momentum into the match. Canada will play for bronze.

“It’s hugely disappointing”, Canada skip Kevin Koe said.
Canada’s Kevin Koe meets John Shuster of the United States in a men’s semifinal Thursday in Pyeongchang. Redemption was on the mind of the Canadians.
“Britain, runners-up to Canada in Sochi four years ago, were forced into the playoff after being thrashed 10-4 in eight ends by the United States on Wednesday”.
Much to the delight of Canadians fans, including those back home who stayed up until the early morning to watch the game, Canada took its first lead off the stick of Marie-Philip Poulin, who took a feed from Meghan Agostabeat and beat a screened Rooney at 6:55. The Canadians never really looked completely comfortable. Canada gold-medal game while they were practicing.
Vice-skip Tyler George spoke about the team’s decision to play a bit more cautiously.
What she may not have been counting on is the U.S. men’s Olympic team shooting her down with the best comeback. Pro football players have jumped on the bandwagon too. Hey, curling team: Can Alley get a calendar with that T-shirt?
“It’s wonderful. We have a lot of positive social media popularity”, he said. “We rallied the troops and rallied each other”. It was a dominant run for Shuster’s team, and the U.S. defeated Canada again on Thursday to advance to the gold medal game.
