Canada’s Brooke Henderson, Mirim Lee share lead at Women’s PGA
Henderson, who denied Ko a third consecutive major, is just the second Canadian to win a women’s major after Sandra Post (1968 Women’s PGA Championship).
Brooke Henderson, of Canada, tees off on the seventh hole in the second round at the Women’s PGA Championship golf tournament at Sahalee Country Club Friday, June 10, 2016, in Sammamish, Wash. Piller had a 69, and Lincicome shot 70. She won the Evian Championship in France at the end of previous year, and the ANA Inspiration in April.
“It’s really cool to, obviously, have my name in those records among those fantastic players”. I hit a lot of really good putts (on Friday) that just didn’t fall.
After going three over in the first five holes, Henderson showed some grit and played her last 13 holes in one under par to put her in a good position for Sunday.
Americans Gerina Piller and Brittany Lincicome were one shot back. Only three players were under par even as Sahalee played easier following overnight rain.
She recorded a second straight 73 and was two shots behind in a tie for fourth in a large group that also included Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn (68) and Anna Nordqvist (69) of Sweden.
Shawn Stefani and South Korea’s Noh Seung-Yul also carded 65s while Dustin Johnson, Brian Gay, Steve Stricker, Colt Knost, Argentina’s Miguel Angel Carballo and Wales’ Jamie Donaldson shared fourth place at 66.
Yang went out in 32 and was 6 under for her round after a birdie at No. 15, before dropping a shot on the 16th. The last victor of this tournament to fail to break par was England’s Laura Davies (even par) in 1996 at DuPont Country Club.
But she stumbled to back-to-back bogeys on number four and number five which allowed different players to take turns at making a move on her lead. Matthew benefitted from a morning starting time – the weather was certainly warmer and drier before noon – and she took advantage for a round of five birdies and just one bogey.”I played really well today”, said Matthew, one of the older players in the field at age 46.
Ko made brilliant saves for par on the 16th and 17th holes, including chipping from on the green on the 17th when she had no angle to putt the ball close.
Ariya Jutanugarn, victor of her past three events, got into the mix late by making birdies on the 16th and 17th holes but was unable to make a 30-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole. Ko, 19, settled for par on the playoff hole.
It would be just her fifth missed cut since the start of the 2013 season, not including any tournaments Park withdrew from early. There’s still three major championships left. “I didn’t feel like it was a bad stroke”.
Three strokes ahead at 2 under entering the round on the hard Wissahickon Course, Langer closed with a 3-over 73 to finish at 1-over 281 – the highest winning score in the history of the event first played in 1983.
DUBLIN (AP) – Bailey Tardy and Monica Vaughn teamed to win two matches to help the United States tie Britain and Ireland 3-3 after the first day of the Curtis Cup amateur matches.
