Canada’s Vasek Pospisil advances to fourth round at Wimbledon | Toronto Star
He had led the big serving Canadian by two sets to one but lost out 6-4 3-6 2-6 6-3 8-6 in three hours and five minutes.
After beating Vesely, Ward said that winning his next match – against Vasek Pospisi on Saturday – would be on a par with his beloved Gunners winning the Premier League title.
“It’s mixed emotions, I didn’t play to the best of my ability”.
“He served well, particularly towards the end and I think that was the difference”, Ward was quoted as saying by Sky Sports News.
Ward had the backing of Court number one on his side as he prepared to face the world number 56, yet, it was Pospisil who took the first set, blocking out the hostile crowd to overcome the Brit by a single break.
It’s the first time Pospisil has advanced to the fourth round of a grand slam tournament.
The Brit will now turn his attention to a mouth-watering Davis Cup quarter-final clash with France at Queen’s Club starting on July 17, where Great Britain will try to reach the World Group semi-finals for the first time since 1981.
Ward has been fortunate enough to see the draw open up for him this summer, with initial first round opponent David Ferrer dropping out through injury, meaning he faced lucky loser Luca Vanni instead to start.
“Most of the points that went to rallies it was me that was on top”.
“He lifted [in the fourth set] and you’ve got to give credit to him because he played really well”, added Ward.
